The 4th Annual Bonaire Ecoswim

(November 6, 2004) The Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire, a diver’s paradise, hosted the 4th Annual 5K and Metric Mile Ecoswim events. In addition, the event featured the islands’ first ever 10K open water swim.

Swimming along one of the world’s most beautiful reefs, six adventuresome athletes competed in the 10K event. Jimmy Wellborn, 49, from Chattanooga, TN, swam through spinner dolphins on his way to being the first 10K swimmer to cross the finish line. Doug Hellerson, 58, from Nashville, TN, was second. Also in the event was Alexandra Paul who showed that she is not only an accomplished actress but also a strong swimmer completing her first 10K swim.

Thirty-six swimmers came from as far away as Canada, New York and Venezuela to participate in the three events. They ranged in age from 12 to 70.
