Bonaire EcoSwim

The 2nd Annual Deep Blue 5k Swim,

Metric Mile Swim,

and Ocean  Festival

Saturday, December 7th, 2002

Location:       The Dutch Caribbean Island of Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles is located 50 miles north of Venezuela and 30 miles from Curacao.  The island is 24 miles long by 3-7 miles wide.  Bonaire has earned its reputation as one of the world's most beautiful dive locations.  Now it is the site of a spectacular open water swim!

The Magic

of Bonaire:   Located outside the hurricane belt, Bonaire's average temperature is 82 F (27.8 C) with an average water temperature of 80 F (26.7 C).  The diligent stewardship of its marine resources has created a water lover’s paradise.  Approximately 60% of the Island and 100 % of nearby Klein Bonaire are National Park.  Families of donkeys roam freely in fields and along roads, nibbling on grass.  All of the waters off Bonaire's coast have been legally protected since 1979.  Come for the swim but also enjoy these other world class adventures and activities: free-diving; scuba diving; mountain biking; sea kayaking; wind surfing; bird watching; and stargazing.

Course:        The ocean swim and festival will host three different competitive opportunities for the whole family.

·         Deep Blue 5k: The start and finish will take place from Captain Don's Habitat Resort.  Swim from Bonaire to Klein Bonaire and back, rounding fixed buoys.  There will be a water stop available along the course.

·         The Metric Mile: The race will start near Klein Bonaire (there will be boat transportation provided) and finish at the dock at Captain Don's Habitat Resort.

·         Fun Swim:   Approximately 200 meters, in front of Captain Don’s dock (race day on-site registration).
